Make sure that you have plenty of time and you have informed your clients about it as this will take some time. You can tell them that you are upgrading the server.
Most of the Virtual Private Servers are provided with the root access to the server and this is a great benefit as you will have more control over your websites and this makes Virtual Private Servers more reliable. You can also shut down the mail servers if you want to, during the transfer. The only problem is, if you are hosting the domains for others as a reseller than it will create a problem for you as passwords are required for this purpose. You will have to create the domains and the user accounts if you wish to move to the new server and you will also have to issue new passwords to your clients as you will not be able to access the passwords which are set by your clients.
If you have Plesk as control panel for your Virtual Private Server than the migration becomes easier due to a feature which is included in this software.”Migration Manager” is a great feature which supports the migration from remote servers using Plesk 2.5.x, 5.x, 6.x, and 7.x, as well as Confixx 2, Ensim 3.5.x, and cPanel 9. You will have to enter some information to use Migration Manager. This information includes the remote host address , the login name (normally root) and the password. You will also have to set set the remote system type (Plesk, cPanel, etc.). Once you have done this just click ‘Next’.
An agent will be sent by the Marketing Manager to the remote server and then a list of domains and clients on the remote server will be offered to you. The client data like the username and the password will be displayed if you will migrate a client. Also, the domains belonging to the client will be displayed. You will have to make a client account ready on the new server if you import a domain to take the ownership of the domain you have imported.
If you do everything correctly you will not face any problem while migrating the data through Migration Manager.
Important things to remember:-
1) Keep downtime to the minimum when you are migrating a server.
2) Make sure that you plan everything before you try to do this so that the users do not know that you have switched the server.
3) Try to perform a trial run before you try to migrate your server.
4) Also, do update your DNS as no one will see your new website if you do not do this. Edit the /etc/hosts file on your client and add your domain name (including the www) with the new IP address and restart your browser so that your new website will be visible. Once you have finished experimenting do not forget to remove this entry.
Games have been played right from the early stages of mankind. As the technology developed the ways of playing games also changed. Nowadays the games are being played on computers and many other excellent devices and provide the ultimate gaming experience to the gamers.
Now, games are played on servers which are also used to host websites. There are a few types of servers but all are not recommended for gaming. The only servers which are recommended for gaming are Virtual Private Servers (VPS) and dedicated servers. virtual Private servers also provide the dedicated environment like the dedicated server. Virtual Private Servers are servers which are setup on the dedicated servers. This is the reason that the Virtual Private Servers are cheaper than the dedicated servers. They are cheap but they offer the same features as the dedicated servers.
If you are looking for a server for gaming purpose then make sure that you know your requirements, the kind of games which will be played on the server and also the number of players which will play the game. The reason for this is you will be able to decide the server only if you know your requirements. If you want to host a game on the Virtual Private Server than you can do it. However, this is not recommended by some of the gamers. Some gamers only prefer dedicated servers for gaming as games require a lot of resources and these resources are only available with the dedicated server. If you are considering Virtual Private Server hosting for gaming than you can do this. You have to see that the resources which are offered with the server are enough for you. You will have to opt for the Virtual Private Server which can offer you maximum resources so that you can you can run the game. The Virtual Private Servers which do not offer much resources will not be able to host games which require much resources and the games which are generally played on servers require a high amount of resources. It also depends on the games size and the type of the games which will be played on the server. Also, the number of players which will play games at a time should be decided. So if all this decided before it will be quite easy to select the type of game server.
What is Overselling ?
Overselling may be defined as a claim to sell beyond the means of delivery. Overselling is better understood by an example.
Suppose there is a web hosting company. It has a server with 40 GB hard drive and 400 GB bandwidth. If the company has sold 10 GB to one single client and has 4 clients in total on the same server then the company has sold out 40 GB hard drive. Also, the company has provided 100 GB bandwidth to each client which makes 400 GB for 4 clients than the resources of the server have been sold out. If in future the company notices that the disk space used by each client is not more than 7 GB and the bandwidth used by each client is not more than 70 GB and the company decides to host yet another client on the same server and provide the client with the same resources which are allocated to other clients on the server.
This means that the company has provided the client with 10GB disk space and 100 GB bandwidth which is not available on the server as it has been assigned to other clients. This is called overselling. It is called overselling as the resources which are offered to the clients are practically not available.
For example a telephone company. If suppose a telephone company has millions of users and all the users use the service at the same time than it will not be possible for the company to provide them the service as the capacity of the company to provide the service is less as compared to the service used when all the clients use the service at the same time. So overselling is not practical and is not reliable also as their is no guarantee when the resources will be used. Overselling is done on a much cheaper rate than regular. Some of the clients are not aware overselling and this is the reason that they choose cheaper packages which are not reliable enough. Overselling also depends on the server which is being used by the provider.
What is a Virtual Private Server (VPS) ?
Virtual Private Server (VPS) is one of the few types of servers available for web hosting. As the name suggests, these servers are like dedicated servers but are virtual. These servers are setup on the dedicated servers and provide the dedicated environment to the client. The features which are provided with the Virtual Private Server are more or less the same as the dedicated servers. As these servers are setup on the dedicated server, they are provided with some resources and these resources can only be utilized by the server to which these resources are alloted. This means no other Virtual Private Server hosted on the same dedicated server can use these resources. This is a very great advantage of a Virtual Private Server but for some it is not.
Overselling on a Virtual Private Server.
If you are planning to have VPS Hosting and start your web hosting business than you will not be able to oversell these resources. The reason for this is, when you will have a Virtual Private Server you will be given some resources with the server. you can utilize these resources but if you try to oversell these resources than the server will not be reliable enough. If you oversell these resources and suppose the resources get used up than the server will get overloaded and might crash as it cannot use up the resources alloted to any other Virtual Private Server hosted on the same dedicated server. Also, the web hosting company which has provided you with the server might cancel your server as your Virtual Private Server is causing problems to the dedicated server on which your server is hosted. Virtual Private Servers are unlike the shared server and the reseller servers which can use up the resources which are alloted to any other account on the same server. So if you try overselling on your Virtual Private Server then you might loose your server as well as your clients. This is the reason that Virtual Private Servers are not suggested for overselling.
How to create VPN on a VPS
18/10/08
To create VPN on your VPS you will have to contact your web hosting provider and ask to enable “NAT” for your VPS. Once you have enabled it for your VPS go to,
Start >> RUN >> Type “services.msc”
Now, select “Routing and Remote Access” on the services list and then go to properties. Now turn the start up type automatic and apply. “Start this service” will be the option displayed if you have done everything correctly. You will have to select this option as we will use this service to route our traffic.
Now go to,
Start >> Settings >> Control Panel >> Administrative Tools >>
“Routing and Remote Access” will be the shortcut. Click on this.
Configuration panel of Routing and Remote Access will be opened.
Right click on the computer and click this option “Configure and Enable remote and routing access”. Firewall service is stopped and disabled before doing this and you should check this before you try to do this.
Now on the configuration wizard click,
1) Next to proceed
2) In the configuration list select “Custom Configuration”, Press Next
3) Select VPN Access & NAT and Basic Firewall Option, Press Next again
4) Now press Finish to end the wizard
After doing this, PPTP & L2TP VPN access to your firewall should be enabled by this wizard and this should be enabled with private routing capability.
Now , private Traffic to the Public Interface should be routed and this could be done by configuring your VPS. To configure your VPS it is necessary to have any of the two mentioned things below :-
a. Two network interface to route one to another.
OR
b. You can use NAT (Network Address Translation) using the Microsoft Loopbac
adapter.
The second one which is mentioned above is to be worked with as most of the you might not find VPS Hosting with two network interfaces.
Now proceed with the “NAT” configuration with the steps below,
1) go to the Routing and Remote Access panel
2) Expand ComputerName (Local)
3) Expand Ip Routing
4) You should find a option says “NAT/Basic Firewall”
5) Right click on “NAT/Basic Firewall”
6) To add the network translation use the New interface
“Internal” is the interface that you should add first. This interface is basically for private network access with default settings. Add your main adapter to the NAT list on second attempt and select.
After all this is done select the option “Public Interface connected to this inferface”.
Last option to be selected is “Enable NAT on this interface”.
Address translation should be working on your network now. Your private requests should now be translated and you can use this VPN as your internet gateway.
Allow the Dial In permission after adding a new user from properties if you want to allow the users to use VPN.
User should be able to login using VPN with the Dial-In permission.
Virtual Private Server hosting is a type of web hosting in which you are provided with a server which provides you with a dedicated environment in spite of the fact that your server is like a shared server on which some of the other clients have an account. This means that some of the other Virtual private servers are hosted on the same physical server. Virtual private servers is the best web hosting solution for the clients who have their own large corporate websites and need a dedicated environment for their websites so that it is easy for them to manage their websites on the server if they have the correct knowledge.
They can easily manage their servers as Virtual Private Servers are generally provided with SSH root access to the clients in the case of Linux private server hosting and with remote desktop for Windows virtual private server hosting. Virtual private server hosting is considered to be reliable as you are not affected with the changes or installations done by the other clients on the server even if you are on the same physical server and are sharing the server with them.
Virtual private servers are considered to be a perfect fill in between dedicated hosting and reseller hosting and this is due to the pricing difference between the two hosting packages. Also, virtual private servers allow to host multiple domains under the same account as the dedicated hosting does. Virtual private servers are much more reliable than shared hosting and reseller hosting as they provide you with the dedicated environment even if the server is shared server and their are some other virtual hosting accounts on the same server. The resources provided with virtual private server hosting only belong to the client and no other client on the server can use the resources even if any other clients wants to.
This makes virtual private servers different from reseller hosting and shared hosting and also reliable in comparison to them. You can install the software’s and programs you want to install on the server and this will not affect anyone on the server as the server is a kind of dedicated server. This makes virtual private servers the best option for the clients who want to start their own web hosting company, or for web designers as they can install the software’s or say some other server side components without affecting the other users on the server.
Virtual private servers are generally provided with a control panel so that you can control the server in the way you want to. These control panel are designed for different purposes, some of the control panels are designed for web hosting purposes and some of them are designed only for administration purposes of Linux and Windows web hosting servers.
Some of the standard web hosting accounts are provided with an access to the control panels as root access to the servers is not provided with standard web hosting accounts. In this case the web hosting providers give an access to the control panels. Normally with virtual private servers, cPanel control panel for Linux virtual hosting and Plesk for Windows virtual hosting are provided by the web hosting providers. Both these control panels allow web hosting providers to manage their web hosting accounts easily and their clients to manage their web hosting plans.
If you have a website on the internet you will have to select a web hosting package for hosting your website. VPS Hosting is a kind of server which provides you a dedicated environment. VPS is one of the most well known forms of web hosting. When you select VPS or any other type of server for hosting your website than you will have to mention some Nameserver for your website.
Nameserver can be defined as the computers accessible on the Internet which explains the location of the website. Resolving is the process which is done by Nameservers. During this process, the domain name of the website is taken and with the help of the Domain Name System (DNS) which keeps the data of the domain names and the corresponding IP addresses, the IP (Internet Protocol) address corresponding to the domain name is given. The location of the website on the internet is determined by the IP address and this is also called as Nameservers. It is also known as DNS servers as they perform the same function (Return the IP address for the domain when a domain name is given). When you buy or configure a Domain name for your website you will have to provide the names of the namesservers as this is very important. When you go for a web hosting package for your website your web hosting provider will ask you for the names of these nameservers. Also, these nameservers are of two types, one is the Primary Nameservers and the other is the Secondary Nameservers.
Primary server:-
You will have to enter the host name and the IP number of the name server in the column given registrant of your domain and this will contain the authoritative information of the domain name and this will be used to resolve that domain name to the corresponding IP address of the domain name. This is know as primary name server as this will be used first to resolve the domain name and the name server which will be entered after this will be considered after this name server. If this column is not filled, the domain name registrar will not proceed further with the process of registering the domain name as this is one of the most important section of the agreement.
Second level domain:-
These domains are considered to be the most important after the top level domains. For example, 1stDomain.com – the “1stDomain.com” part is the second level domain. These domains are registered under the top level domain registry.
What is VPS Hosting?
VPS is an abbreviation for Virtual Private Server. VPS servers are also known as Virtual Dedicated Server (VDS for short). VPS server is a perfect fill in between a shared server and a Dedicated server. The reason for this is, VPS servers are shared servers which provide the clients with a dedicated environment. Some of the VPS hosting account are setup on the same physical node but provide a dedicated environment to the clients. The resources which are allocated to the client with the package cannot be used by any other client just like the dedicated server. These resources can only be used by the client to whom these resources are given. Also, the client of the VPS server is given the root access to the server just like the client on the dedicated server. Client can make any changes on the server according to him. He can install software’s, programs and can also make some changes in the programs if he wants some of the changes to be done and this will not affect any other client hosted on the same dedicated server. This makes VPS server different from the shared server and like the dedicated server. Client having a VPS server is able to work on the server just like the client of the dedicated server. Client of the VPS server is the administrator of the server or say the part of the dedicated server which is provided to him. VPS server is also provided with the control panel so that the client can handle the server properly and according to him. VPS server is also quite secured. Hackers are unable to make any serious damage to the server.
What is a Dedicated server ?
Dedicated server is a server which is dedicated server or say given to one single client. Dedicated server is also called as private server for the same reason. There is no other client having an account on the same server. Client has the root access to the server and can perform the task he wants to perform on the server with ease. In short, Dedicated server is kind of a server which is owned by the client. The resources which are given with the server belongs and can only be used by the client. Also, if the resources which are offered with the server are more than enough for the client then he can give the resources to anyone he wants to. So, Dedicated server can also be used by resellers and is a better option in comparison to reseller hosting. As the client has full access to the server he can install any software or programs he wants to and can make any changes in them if he wants to. As the root access to the server is to the client, he is the administrator of the server and can perform any task he wants to on the server. Dedicated server is also provided with the control panel so that the client can manage the server with ease. He can also manage the account holders and the resources allotted to them respectively if the client is a reseller. Dedicated server is the most secured kind of server in the web hosting industry. Also, Dedicated servers are the most reliable form of web hosting as the client has the full access to the server and he can manage the server resources with ease which reduces the chances of the server facing downtime. All these, and many other benefits of the Dedicated server makes it the choice of almost everyone related to the web hosting industry.
Comparison :-
If we compare VPS server with a Dedicated server than the main difference is the resources which are being offered with the server. As VPS server is a kind of shared server you will get only a part of the physical server and its resources. Whereas, in a Dedicated server you will get the whole physical server and the resources of the server for your own. But, as you get the resources of the whole server for your own you will have to pay for the entire server. This is one of the disadvantages of the Dedicated server as the cost of the entire server is quite high as compared to the cost of the VPS server and this is due to the fact that in a VPS server you are paying only for the part of the server and not the entire server. Also, as the Dedicated server entirely belongs to you, it is quite difficult to manage the server until and unless you have the proper knowledge to manage the server. Dedicated server requires a very good knowledge and technical skills in comparison to the VPS server. So if you have a good knowledge, technical skills and you can afford a Dedicated server than you can go for it.
Virtual Private Server (VPS for short) is a server which provides a Dedicated environment to the client inspite of the fact that it is a kind of shared server. VPS Hosting has almost all the features of a dedicated server. The client does not face any problems even if there is an issue with any of the VPS’s hosted on the same server. So this is a very good benefit for the client. Also, the client can install any kind of software he wants to install on his VPS and this will not affect any other VPS hosted on the same server. The resources which are offered with the VPS cannot be used by websites of any other client. Client can easily view the resources which are used by various parts of his website by some of the additional features. One of the features which is the Disk Space Viewer allows the client to view the exact disk space being used up by the different parts of his website.
Below are some easy steps which will help you to view the Disk Space used by different parts of your website:-
1) Click the Disk Usage button on the home page.
2) A list of items that take up the disk space will be displayed.
3) This list is displayed in the order of the biggest to smallest.
4) Just click on the required buttons to view the use of space on your website.
What is a Shared server ?
Shared server is a kind of server in which a number of accounts are setup on the same server. Shared server provides you with limited resources to host a small website. You will not be able to run a website with good amount of traffic on a Shared server. Also, as there are many other accounts on the same server your website will be affected by some of the other websites hosted on the same server. Shared server are not considered to be a reliable option as the server can get overloaded and your website might face downtime sometimes. You will not be given root access to the server if you have an account on the Shared server. For this reason, you will not be able to install any kind of software’s or programs if you have an account on a Shared server.
Also, if there is some kind of issues with any other website or websites on the server it will affect the server and in turn your website if it is hosted on the same server. It is not possible to run any mission critical website on the Shared server as the server is not reliable enough and you might face heavy losses if you run mission critical website on the Shared server. Shared servers are also not secured and your website can be hacked easily in comparison to VPS server. So, Shared server cannot be considered as an option if you are looking for a reliable and secured Web Hosting solution.
What is a VPS server ?
VPS is an abbreviation for Virtual Private Server. VPS server is also called a VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server). VPS server is also a kind of a Shared server but is much more secured and reliable in comparison to Shared server. A dedicated server is divided into parts and VPS servers are created. So, when you go for a VPS server you are given a part of the dedicated server which is provided with a dedicated environment. As the VPS server has a dedicated environment it acts like a Dedicated server or in other words a Private server. For this reason, VPS servers are provided with the root access to the server. As the client has the root access to the server client can install software’s and programs according to him on the server. As the VPS server is a kind of dedicated server, the changes made by the client on his server will not affect any other VPS server on the same server. Also, the resources which are offered with the VPS server package are only given to the client of the server and these resources cannot be used by any other client of website other than the client to whom the resources are provided.
This is considered as a great benefit of the VPS server over the Shared server. You can also host multiple domains on a single VPS server and manage the domains without any problem. If there is any problem with any other VPS server on the same server on which you have your VPS server than too your server will not face any problem and work properly. As you are given the root access to your VPS server you will be able to manage your own resources and as your server will not face any problem. This is the reason that VPS servers are quite reliable. Also, VPS servers are more secured in comparison to Shared server and you will also be able to install any anti-virus software if you want to install it on your server. All these points make VPS server much more reliable and secured in comparison to Shared server.
Comparison:-
If you are looking to run a small website which does not require much resources as it does not have much traffic on it as well as it is not a mission critical website which requires an up time guarantee and you are not worried about the security than you can go for Shared server. Otherwise, if you are running a mission critical website which requires good amount of resources and security with guaranteed up time than you should go a VPS server. Also, you will able to host a number of domains on the same VPS server and also manage them without any problem with the control panel which is not possible with a Shared server.
The resources which are offered with the Shared hosting account are only allotted to you and no other client on the same server can use your those resources even if he wants to. On a Shared server you will get some resources which are allotted to you but these resources are not guaranteed and some other client on the server might use these resources. You will not be able to install any kind of software’s or programs on the Shared server as you do not have the root access to the server. This is not the case with a VPS server and you will get the root access to the server and you will be able to install software’s and programs on the server which you need.
VPS (Virtual Private Server) is one of the most trusted forms of web hosting. VPS is a kind of shared hosting but provides you with a dedicated environment. A VPS acts like a Dedicated server for the client and has some allotted resources which are provided with it. As VPS is a kind of shared server there are some of the other VPS which are setup on the same server. But, VPS is unlike the shared account in which your website will be affected if there are any issues with any of the other websites hosted on the same server. In fact, your websites will not be affected if there is any problem with other accounts hosted on the same server. Also, as you get the root access to your VPS, you will be able to install any software or program on your server. VPS is always provided with a control panel. This control panel will help you to manage your server. Control panel allows you perform several tasks on your VPS very easily.
