What is a Shared server ?

Shared server is a kind of server in which a number of accounts are setup on the same server. Shared server provides you with limited resources to host a small website. You will not be able to run a website with good amount of traffic on a Shared server. Also, as there are many other accounts on the same server your website will be affected by some of the other websites hosted on the same server. Shared server are not considered to be a reliable option as the server can get overloaded and your website might face downtime sometimes. You will not be given root access to the server if you have an account on the Shared server. For this reason, you will not be able to install any kind of software’s or programs if you have an account on a Shared server.

Also, if there is some kind of issues with any other website or websites on the server it will affect the server and in turn your website if it is hosted on the same server. It is not possible to run any mission critical website on the Shared server as the server is not reliable enough and you might face heavy losses if you run mission critical website on the Shared server. Shared servers are also not secured and your website can be hacked easily in comparison to VPS server. So, Shared server cannot be considered as an option if you are looking for a reliable and secured Web Hosting solution.

What is a VPS server ?

VPS is an abbreviation for Virtual Private Server. VPS server is also called a VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server). VPS server is also a kind of a Shared server but is much more secured and reliable in comparison to Shared server. A dedicated server is divided into parts and VPS servers are created. So, when you go for a VPS server you are given a part of the dedicated server which is provided with a dedicated environment. As the VPS server has a dedicated environment it acts like a Dedicated server or in other words a Private server. For this reason, VPS servers are provided with the root access to the server. As the client has the root access to the server client can install software’s and programs according to him on the server. As the VPS server is a kind of dedicated server, the changes made by the client on his server will not affect any other VPS server on the same server. Also, the resources which are offered with the VPS server package are only given to the client of the server and these resources cannot be used by any other client of website other than the client to whom the resources are provided.

This is considered as a great benefit of the VPS server over the Shared server. You can also host multiple domains on a single VPS server and manage the domains without any problem. If there is any problem with any other VPS server on the same server on which you have your VPS server than too your server will not face any problem and work properly. As you are given the root access to your VPS server you will be able to manage your own resources and as your server will not face any problem. This is the reason that VPS servers are quite reliable. Also, VPS servers are more secured in comparison to Shared server and you will also be able to install any anti-virus software if you want to install it on your server. All these points make VPS server much more reliable and secured in comparison to Shared server.

Comparison:-

If you are looking to run a small website which does not require much resources as it does not have much traffic on it as well as it is not a mission critical website which requires an up time guarantee and you are not worried about the security than you can go for Shared server. Otherwise, if you are running a mission critical website which requires good amount of resources and security with guaranteed up time than you should go a VPS server. Also, you will able to host a number of domains on the same VPS server and also manage them without any problem with the control panel which is not possible with a Shared server.

The resources which are offered with the Shared hosting account are only allotted to you and no other client on the same server can use your those resources even if he wants to. On a Shared server you will get some resources which are allotted to you but these resources are not guaranteed and some other client on the server might use these resources. You will not be able to install any kind of software’s or programs on the Shared server as you do not have the root access to the server. This is not the case with a VPS server and you will get the root access to the server and you will be able to install software’s and programs on the server which you need.
